Banded Topminnow

Fundulus cingulatus is an attractively patterned surface killifish from slowly flowing and still blackwater habitats of the Atlantic and Gulf coastal plains from North Carolina to Florida. Both sexes display bold, alternating dark and light vertical bands — particularly pronounced in males — on a metallic olive-green to blue-green body. In well-lit aquaria, the iridescent scale colouration adds a shimmering quality to the banding pattern.

In the aquarium, Banded Topminnows appreciate soft, slightly acidic water with tannins, floating vegetation for surface shelter, and dense planting that replicates the weedy coastal plain habitats they inhabit. They are adaptable once settled but thrive especially in blackwater-style setups. A tight-fitting lid is mandatory as they are strong jumpers.

They accept live and frozen surface foods readily and transition to quality floating dry foods without great difficulty. Their bold pattern, ease of care, and manageable size make them an attractive alternative to the commoner Fundulus species for native fish enthusiasts.
