Chaca bankanensis is found in blackwater streams and swamp forests of Borneo and Sumatra, where its cryptic, heavily-fringed brown body blends seamlessly into the tannin-stained leaf-litter floor of its habitat. It is almost identical in lifestyle to C. chaca, relying on total camouflage and barbel-luring to ambush small fish prey. Distinguishing features from the Indian species include slightly finer dermal fringing and the Southeast Asian origin.

In the aquarium, C. bankanensis benefits from blackwater conditions — low pH, tannin-stained water from peat or driftwood, and warm temperatures matching its tropical rainforest stream habitat. Fine dark sand substrate and floating dead leaves are ideal. Like C. chaca, it is strictly a solitary ambush predator and should be kept alone or with fish many times its own size.

The Bankan Squarehead Catfish is somewhat less frequently available than C. chaca, appearing in Borneo and Sumatra import shipments. It commands a modest premium. For keepers who appreciate truly cryptic, specialised predators, it is one of the most rewarding challenges in the freshwater hobby.
