Barclaya longifolia Red

The red form of Barclaya longifolia is the most prized and visually striking variant of the species, differing from the green form in the vivid crimson-red to purple-red colouration of the leaf undersides and the reddish flush visible on the upper surfaces of young leaves. As leaves mature they develop a richer, more complex contrast between the olive-green upper surface and the deep burgundy-red beneath, visible when leaves tilt slightly in gentle current flow.

Care requirements are identical to the green form — this is a plant that demands warm, soft, slightly acidic, shaded conditions and resents hard water, strong light, or substrate disturbance once settled. Under optimal conditions it produces long, strongly undulating, beautifully ruffled leaves that make it one of the most architecturally dramatic plants in any layout.

The red form is less commonly available than the green and commands a premium price accordingly. It is best reserved for dedicated planted tanks where water chemistry can be precisely maintained — the reward for careful husbandry is a specimen that regularly draws admiration at aquascape competitions and club displays.
