Barnard's Barb

Barbus barnardi is restricted to a small number of river systems in the Western Cape of South Africa, where it inhabits cold, fast-flowing, well-oxygenated mountain streams with rocky substrates and clear water. It is a threatened species in the wild due to habitat loss and invasive fish. In captivity it is sought by specialist collectors of African coldwater cyprinids.

This species requires cooler temperatures than most aquarium barbs — ideally 16–22°C — and does best in tanks with strong water movement, high oxygen levels, and a rocky or sandy substrate. It should be kept in groups of six or more and does not tolerate warm, stagnant conditions.

Feeding is straightforward; like most barbs it is an opportunistic omnivore accepting sinking pellets, frozen invertebrates, and occasional algae-based foods. Its sensitivity to water quality means regular water changes and efficient filtration are essential.
