Bates' Microsynodontis

Microsynodontis batesii is a diminutive mochokid from the forest streams of Cameroon and Nigeria, one of only a handful of truly nano-sized catfish within the family. It closely resembles a miniature Synodontis in body plan, complete with the characteristic three-paired barbels and mochokid finnage, but reaches only about 5 cm at full adult size.

In the aquarium it thrives in soft, slightly acidic conditions replicating its native West African forest stream habitat, with leaf litter, fine-branched wood and low to moderate flow. It is a peaceful species that poses no threat to even the smallest nano fish or invertebrates.

Groups of four or more are recommended; solitary individuals are shy and may refuse food, while groups display natural social behaviour and feed more confidently.
