Beardless Barb (Cyclocheilichthys)

Cyclocheilichthys apogon is widely distributed across the Mekong and Chao Phraya basins and numerous other river systems of mainland Southeast Asia, where it inhabits large rivers, lakes, and the deeper sections of medium-sized tributaries. It is a moderately large, torpedo-shaped cyprinid with a bright silver body and large, clearly defined scales. Unlike many barbs it lacks barbels — hence 'beardless' — and has an almost danio-like streamlined profile.

In the aquarium this species requires a spacious tank with strong filtration and significant water movement, as befits a fish accustomed to large rivers. It schools actively in mid-water and is best kept in groups of four or more. Despite growing to 25 cm it is entirely peaceful and poses no threat to other fish.

Feeding Cyclocheilichthys apogon is straightforward: it accepts sinking pellets, flake, and frozen or live invertebrates. Its adaptability and peaceful temperament make it a useful and attractive addition to large Southeast Asian community aquariums alongside bala sharks, larger barbs, and big rasboras.
