Begonia amphioxus

Begonia amphioxus is a renowned collector species from the rainforests of Borneo, famous for its extraordinary elongated, lance-shaped leaves that taper to a fine point and are scattered with vivid blood-red spots on a glossy medium-green background. The contrast of red on green creates one of the most visually arresting foliar displays in the entire begonia genus. Small pale-pink flowers are produced on delicate axillary cymes but are completely overshadowed by the spectacular foliage.

In cultivation, B. amphioxus requires the warm, humid conditions of a well-maintained tropical terrarium or paludarium. It grows as a small shrubby plant with a moderately upright habit and benefits from a rich, fast-draining substrate. Excellent air circulation is necessary alongside high humidity to prevent Botrytis and other fungal issues common to begonias in enclosed builds.
