Benitochromis tricoti

Benitochromis tricoti is one of the more elongated and slender Benitochromis species, named after collector R. Tricot, and is found in Cameroonian forest river systems. Males develop vibrant blue-suffused dorsal and caudal fin colouration that becomes particularly intense during courtship, providing a striking visual contrast to the warm, tan-to-olive banded body.

As with all Benitochromis, B. tricoti is a biparental mouthbrooder with elaborate pre-spawning courtship rituals. It is genuinely rare in the hobby, appearing occasionally through specialist West African cichlid importers and dedicated breeders. Its slender form and relatively peaceful temperament make it suitable for a well-structured community tank of adequate size.

Soft, slightly acidic water (pH 5.5–7.0) matching Cameroon coastal forest streams is ideal. A 150 L tank with bogwood, flat rocks, and plant cover provides appropriate conditions for keeping and breeding this elegant species.
