Benitochromis ufermanni

Benitochromis ufermanni is the largest of the commonly kept Benitochromis species, reaching up to 14 cm, and is considered one of the showpieces of the genus. Males display bold black lateral banding on a blue-green iridescent body, and the finnage is edged in deep blue. The species is an active open-water spawner with biparental mouthbrooding, and unlike some Benitochromis, often spawns in midwater rather than on the substrate.

Due to its larger size, B. ufermanni requires more space than other genus members — a 150 L minimum — and will be more assertive during breeding. The pair bond is strong and the courtship display is particularly impressive, involving full-body lateral displays and parallel swimming.

Soft to moderately hard water (pH 5.5–7.0) at 24–27°C is suitable. Dense planting and bogwood structure help diffuse aggression and provide the pair with a sense of territory without the tank feeling overly constrained.
