Biocellatus Figure-Eight (Java Form)

The Javanese form of Tetraodon biocellatus exhibits a particularly well-defined, rounded figure-8 pattern on the dorsal surface and shows marginally higher tolerance for freshwater-to-brackish transitions compared to mainland Southeast Asian populations. It is one of the most personable puffers in the trade, quickly learning to associate its keeper with feeding time and exhibiting expressive behaviour when hungry. Java populations are collected from coastal river systems where salinity fluctuates seasonally, which may explain the broader tolerance. While it can be maintained briefly in low-end freshwater, long-term health demands at least light brackish conditions. It remains one of the better starter puffers for keepers moving beyond the smallest species.
