Black-banded Myleus

Myleus schomburgkii is instantly recognisable by the single broad black vertical band that crosses its mid-body against brilliant silver flanks. It is one of the larger Myleus species, capable of reaching 42 cm, and requires genuinely large aquaria with excellent filtration to maintain long-term.

In its native Amazon and Orinoco habitats it forms schools in open water and flooded forest margins. The herbivorous diet is satisfied in captivity with a varied selection of plant-based foods and it will consume soft aquatic vegetation readily. A school of five or more creates an extraordinary visual display.

Not subject to piranha restrictions in most regions.
