Black Diamond Blasting Sand

Black Diamond Blasting Sand is an industrial coal slag abrasive originally designed for sandblasting applications, widely adopted by the freshwater aquarium hobby as a dramatically dark, cost-effective substrate. Its near-black colour and angular, medium-fine grain size create a bold aesthetic that makes green plants, colourful fish, and shrimp appear vivid against the dark background.

Despite its industrial origins, Black Diamond Blasting Sand is completely aquarium-safe after rinsing. It is fully inert and does not leach any minerals or compounds that would affect water chemistry, pH, or hardness. Its angular grain shape is somewhat rougher than natural river sands and may not be ideal for very delicate-barbelled species, but is generally safe for most freshwater fish and invertebrates.

At a fraction of the cost of branded aquarium substrates of equivalent depth, Black Diamond Blasting Sand is one of the most popular budget substrates in the fishkeeping community, particularly for planted tanks, shrimp setups, and community aquariums where a dark aesthetic is desired without the expense of premium soils.
