Black Lava Rock

Black Lava Rock shares the same structural advantages as red lava rock but presents a dramatically darker aesthetic, with near-black colouration that creates powerful visual contrast in aquascapes planted with bright green or red aquatic plants. Its deep tone makes it a favourite substrate-level accent in nature aquariums and high-tech planted tanks.

The extensive porous surface area rapidly develops rich biofilm colonies that shrimp, Otocinclus, and other grazing species actively feed from. This makes black lava rock doubly functional — aesthetically complementary and biologically beneficial. In shrimp tanks, attaching moss such as Christmas Moss or Taiwan Moss directly to lava rock surfaces using thread or tissue culture glue creates lush, organic moss mountains.

Black lava rock is entirely pH neutral and inert with regard to water chemistry, making it universally compatible with all freshwater setups from soft-water discus tanks to hard-water Malawi cichlid aquariums.
