Black Night Snakehead

Channa nox is a remarkable snakehead from Guangxi Province, southern China. Juveniles display vivid orange-and-black banding, but as they mature the orange is progressively replaced by black until adults are entirely jet-black with no visible patterning. This dramatic ontogenetic colour change makes it one of the most visually distinctive and sought-after snakehead species.

C. nox is a medium-sized species reaching approximately 22 cm and is more manageable than large Channa species. It requires slightly cooler temperatures than many Southeast Asian snakeheads, reflecting its subtropical origin. The species is an air-breather and demands a tight-fitting lid.

Due to its eye-catching black adult colouration, C. nox commands premium prices and is eagerly sought by snakehead enthusiasts. Captive breeding has been achieved and growing demand has driven breeding programs in Asia. It is suitable for an experienced keeper willing to dedicate a species aquarium to this fascinating fish.
