Black Oscar

The Black Oscar is produced through selective breeding for melanin overexpression, resulting in a fish with a predominantly dark charcoal-black or deep olive-black body with minimal expression of the typical orange-red markings. Some individuals may show faint orange flecks or a subtle iridescent sheen on the scales, but the overall appearance is dark and dramatic.

Black Oscars are a striking choice for aquarists who appreciate a more understated, sleek aesthetic compared to the high-contrast Tiger or bright Red Oscar forms. Against a light-coloured substrate and background, the deep black colouration stands out dramatically and creates a powerful visual impact in large display aquariums.

All Oscar traits of intelligence, interaction, and assertiveness are fully present in the Black Oscar. Care requirements are identical to other Oscar variants.
