Hyphessobrycon melanostichos is a rarely exported Bolivian tetra from the upper Madeira basin with a subtly beautiful peach-orange body colouration and a prominent black humeral spot from which it takes its species name. Reaching about 4 cm, it belongs to the 'rosy tetra' group of Hyphessobrycon species and shares their characteristic combination of warm body tones with bold fin markings — males develop a distinctive elongated and marked dorsal fin.

In the aquarium this species requires soft to moderately soft water, slightly acidic conditions, and warm temperatures. It is at its best in a densely planted aquarium with fine-leaved plants and driftwood that simulates its Bolivian Amazon tributary habitat. In groups of 10 or more the warm peach colouration of the school is complemented by the males' fin displays.

Hyphessobrycon melanostichos is an undemanding feeder that accepts a wide range of small prepared, frozen, and live foods. It is peaceful and compatible with other small SA community fish. Its rarity in the trade makes it a prized addition to specialist South American planted displays and it is an excellent companion for dwarf cichlids, corydoras, and other smaller SA tetras.
