Black Spot Tetra

Hyphessobrycon melanostichos is a medium-sized, handsome tetra from the Rio Teles Pires in Mato Grosso, Brazil. The species' most distinctive feature is a bold, jet-black humeral blotch that sits prominently just behind the operculum, contrasting sharply with the silver-gold body. Fins are typically clear to faintly yellowish.

This species inhabits clear to slightly blackwater rivers with moderate current over sandy substrate. In the aquarium it does well in groups of eight or more and benefits from a spacious tank with open swimming areas and peripheral planting. It is an active, inquisitive fish that is very easy to feed.

Any quality dry food will be accepted, supplemented with frozen bloodworm, brine shrimp, and daphnia. Regular water changes and stable parameters produce the best colouration and long-term health.
