Blackbanded Sunfish

The Blackbanded Sunfish (also called the Oldwife) is native to southern Australian coastal waters and estuaries, where it inhabits kelp beds and shallow reefs. In the aquarium trade it is sometimes offered as a freshwater or brackish species, though it is primarily marine.

Its dramatic black-and-white vertical banding, elongated dorsal fin spines, and strong body make it a visually arresting display fish. It requires cool, well-oxygenated, very clean water and is sensitive to poor water quality.

This species is best kept by experienced hobbyists able to maintain the cool, clean conditions it demands. Its temperament is semi-aggressive and it will harass smaller companions.
