Blackfin Synodontis

Synodontis melanopterus is immediately identifiable by the deep black pigmentation of its dorsal, pectoral and caudal fin membranes, which stand in vivid contrast to its pale, lightly spotted body. Native to West African river systems, it is a strong swimmer and active forager that occupies the lower water column and substrate in large rivers.

In the aquarium it is hardier and less demanding than many of its congeners, tolerating a fairly wide range of water parameters and adapting readily to prepared foods. It is robust enough to hold its own among large African cichlids while being non-destructive toward plants or decor.

This species grows large and requires a spacious tank; adults kept in cramped conditions become stressed and may exhibit increased aggression toward tankmates.
