Blacknose Whiptail Catfish

Sturisoma nigrirostrum is immediately identifiable among Sturisoma species by the deep black colouration of its snout region, a feature that persists in both sexes and across all life stages. It is native to lowland rivers of Colombia and is occasionally available through specialist importers. The contrast between the dark rostrum and the pale tan-brown body makes it one of the most visually distinctive whiptails in the family.

In terms of care, Sturisoma nigrirostrum follows the standard large Sturisoma template — it needs a spacious aquarium, good water flow, clean soft to moderately hard water, and plentiful grazing surfaces. It is an active species compared to the Farlowella and will move across multiple surfaces throughout the day and into the evening.

Captive breeding records exist for this species, following the typical Sturisoma reproductive pattern. Males develop facial odontodes when in breeding condition and will guard egg clutches deposited on smooth surfaces. It is a suitable species for the intermediate keeper with an appropriately sized aquarium.
