Blue-eyed Pleco L067

The Blue-eyed Pleco (L067) is a large and charismatic loricariid from the Rio Magdalena system of Colombia, celebrated for its striking electric-blue iridescent eyes — one of the most arresting features of any pleco. The rest of the body is less flashy but handsomely patterned with fine dark spots on a chocolate-brown base.

L067 is a herbivore that grazes on algae and wood in the wild. In the aquarium it requires large driftwood pieces for grazing and shelter, supplemented with algae wafers, spirulina, and blanched vegetables. Clean, well-oxygenated water is essential, and the species appreciates cooler temperatures than many Amazon L-numbers, reflecting its Colombian mountain-stream origins.

Due to its large adult size, L067 requires a very spacious aquarium with powerful filtration. It is generally peaceful and can be housed with other large, robust fish. However, it can live for 15–20 years and reaches 35 cm, making it a true long-term commitment. This species is on conservation watch lists due to habitat loss, and captive-bred specimens should be sought whenever possible.
