The Blue Velvet Shrimp is a captive-bred colour morph of Neocaridina davidi, selectively developed to express consistent, vivid blue coloration across the entire body. Colour intensity ranges from pale sky blue in lower-grade specimens to deep cobalt or navy in premium lines, and high-quality Blue Velvets are among the most attractive of all Neocaridina variants.
Neocaridina davidi originates from Taiwan and adjacent regions of East Asia, where it inhabits clean, well-oxygenated streams and ponds with moderate hardness. Through decades of captive breeding, a wide array of colour morphs has been developed from this single species, of which the Blue Velvet is one of the most popular and widely available.
Blue Velvet Shrimp are celebrated for their resilience and adaptability. Unlike Caridina shrimp, they tolerate a broad range of pH, GH, and KH values, making them compatible with most dechlorinated tap water supplies in temperate and subtropical climates. They do not require RO water or active buffering substrate, and can thrive in community aquariums with peaceful nano fish.
These shrimp are active, industrious grazers that clean up algae, biofilm, and organic debris throughout the tank. They breed prolifically in suitable conditions, making them excellent for aquarists who wish to establish self-sustaining colonies. Their combination of visual appeal, hardiness, and ease of breeding makes the Blue Velvet one of the best entry points into the dwarf shrimp hobby.
