Bluebell Pleco L033

The Bluebell Pleco (L033) is among the most coveted loricariids from the Colombian Orinoco system, particularly the blackwater Rio Inírida drainage. Its defining feature is the iridescent blue sheen that catches in the fins under aquarium lighting, set against a deep black body with scattered lighter spots. Specimens in prime condition are truly breathtaking display fish.

This species demands soft, acidic blackwater conditions that closely mimic its natural habitat. Tannin-rich water created by the addition of dried Indian almond leaves, alder cones, or peat filtration suits it well. Strong flow and high oxygenation are still required despite the blackwater chemistry. The diet should be varied, including algae wafers, blanched vegetables, and protein-rich supplements.

The Bluebell Pleco is not commonly available and commands a premium price in the hobby. It is semi-aggressive toward conspecifics and requires dedicated cave territories. Best kept as a solitary specimen in an Orinoco biotope aquarium with similarly adapted species such as altum angelfish, pencilfish, and small tetras.
