Blyxa japonica

Blyxa japonica is native to rice paddies, marshes, and slow-moving streams across Japan and Southeast Asia, where it grows partially submerged in soft, slightly acidic water. In the aquarium it forms a compact, grass-like rosette of fine, linear leaves 10–20 cm long that take on striking amber and reddish hues under strong lighting and CO2 supplementation. It is one of the most popular plants in competitive aquascaping, celebrated for its natural, meadow-like quality and the warm autumn tones it introduces to planted layouts. While not as demanding as many high-tech plants, it gives its best colour and growth with CO2 injection and bright light. It propagates by producing side shoots that can be divided and replanted.
