Boesemani Ajamaru Rainbowfish

The Ajamaru Lakes variant of Melanotaenia boesemani is widely regarded by rainbowfish enthusiasts as the benchmark form of this iconic species. While all M. boesemani display the dramatic bicolour split between a blue-grey anterior and blazing orange-red posterior, Ajamaru specimens sourced directly from the type locality are noted for a sharper, more clearly defined colour boundary and richer, more saturated hues than most commercially produced captive-bred strains.

True Ajamaru stock is rarely available and commands a premium price, as maintaining pure bloodlines separate from mass-produced M. boesemani requires dedicated effort. Keepers of this form are encouraged to maintain provenance records and practice responsible breeding to preserve the phenotypic integrity of the population. Care requirements are identical to standard M. boesemani — warm, alkaline, moderately hard water in a spacious aquarium.

Male Ajamaru Boesemani reach their most spectacular colouration at 12–18 months. The brilliant colour split is unique among freshwater fish and makes this one of the most photogenic species in the entire hobby.
