Bogwood

Bogwood refers to ancient wood preserved in anaerobic peat bogs for hundreds to thousands of years, emerging with a distinctive near-black colour and exceptionally dense, heavy form. The peat environment removes water and infuses the wood with humic and fulvic acids that it continues to release into the aquarium, producing the dark amber, softened blackwater conditions prized for Amazonian, Southeast Asian, and West African biotopes.

The tannin and humic acid release from Bogwood is among the highest of any aquarium driftwood, making it the most effective natural pH and hardness-reducing wood available. This makes it particularly valuable for Discus breeders, Apistogramma specialists, and shrimp keepers targeting very soft, acidic water chemistry. The humic substances also have mild antibacterial properties that benefit fish health.

Bogwood is extremely heavy and dense — it sinks reliably with no preparation. Its irregular, gnarled forms carry a sense of great age that is visually compelling in biotope aquariums, and moss attaches well to its dark, rough surface.
