Bolbitis auriculata

Bolbitis auriculata is an Asian species of water fern distinguished by its characteristic auriculate (ear-like) basal pinnae, which give the fronds a unique silhouette compared to its African relatives. Native to fast-flowing, shaded streams across Southeast Asia, it produces dark-green, leathery fronds on a creeping rhizome that anchors firmly to rocky substrates and submerged wood. It is less commonly cultivated than Bolbitis heudelotii but equally rewarding for the patient aquascaper.

This species prefers slightly cooler, highly oxygenated water and performs best with moderate flow passing over the rhizome. It is sensitive to stagnant conditions and will quickly show signs of rhizome rot if water circulation is inadequate. Growth is slow under low light; medium light with CO2 supplementation brings out the best colouration and vigour. It pairs well with Southeast Asian hardscape themes and works beautifully alongside Java fern and Bucephalandra.
