Bolbitis hydrophila

Bolbitis hydrophila is a large, robust African water fern found along the margins of tropical rivers and streams, particularly in regions with moderate to strong current. Unlike the highly divided fronds of Bolbitis heudelotii, this species produces broader, less deeply lobed fronds with a more solid appearance, lending it a distinct character in the aquarium. The fronds emerge bright green and deepen to a rich olive-green as they mature.

This species demands the same conditions as its relatives: clean, well-oxygenated water with moderate to strong flow, attachment to hardscape rather than burial in substrate, and protection from stagnant zones. Under medium light with CO2 supplementation it is a vigorous grower that can become a prominent feature in larger aquascapes. Regular pruning of older fronds encourages fresh growth. It pairs beautifully with African biotope setups featuring Congo river driftwood and Anubias.
