Brokopondo Eartheater

Geophagus brokopondo is endemic to the Brokopondo reservoir drainage in central Suriname and remains one of the rarer eartheaters in the hobby. Its defining characteristic is a warm yellow-orange colouration along the lower flanks, belly, and cheeks that contrasts with the iridescent blue-green scaling of the upper body. Captive specimens in excellent condition present a truly stunning appearance.

Despite its small natural range, this species responds well to standard eartheater husbandry: clean, slightly acidic, soft water, and a deep fine-sand substrate. Its modest adult size of around 20 cm makes it manageable in medium-large aquaria. Groups are recommended to promote natural behaviour and reduce individual aggression.

Due to its rarity and limited collection range, conservation-minded keepers are encouraged to establish breeding colonies. Captive breeding following standard mouthbrooding protocols is achievable and helps reduce wild collection pressure.
