Ameiurus nebulosus is the most broadly distributed of the North American bullhead catfishes, found from the Maritime Provinces of Canada south to Florida and west to the Great Plains. It is distinguished from the Yellow Bullhead by its heavily mottled brown and black body pattern and dark-pigmented chin barbels. It tolerates an extraordinary range of conditions — from pristine lakes to polluted urban waterways — making it one of the hardiest freshwater fish in North America.

In the aquarium, Brown Bullheads are robust, long-lived fish with distinct personalities. They are highly tactile, using their barbels to explore every surface of the tank, and they become genuinely tame with regular keeper interaction. Adults grow to 45 cm and produce a considerable bioload, demanding powerful filtration and large tank volumes.

They are primarily nocturnal and spend daylight hours in preferred caves or shelters. They are omnivorous opportunists and will accept virtually any food offered. Their combination of hardiness, personality, and longevity makes them rewarding large native catfish for aquarists with appropriate facilities.

Orders are processed within 1-2 business days. Standard shipping typically takes 3-5 business days.
