Bucephalandra 'Crocodile' is named for the pronounced, rough, scaly texture of its leaf surface — a texture more extreme than the corrugation seen in coffeefolia Anubias, giving the leaves an almost reptilian quality when viewed closely. This unusual surface texture combined with the genus's characteristic iridescence creates a fascinating visual and tactile complexity that photographs exceptionally well.

The scaly texture means the leaf surface interacts with light in a highly complex way, creating micro-shadows and highlights across the entire leaf that shift as the viewing angle changes. Under strong lighting the overall impression is of a dark, glowing, textured jewel mounted on the aquascape.
