Bucephalandra 'Deep Purple'

Bucephalandra 'Deep Purple' is among the most dramatic and visually complex members of the genus, producing leaves with a deep purple-red underside that is visible through the translucent margins of the leaf and at the edges, while the upper surface presents a dark forest-green with a shifting iridescent quality. The visual effect when viewed from different angles — catching glimpses of the purple underside through edge-on viewing — is uniquely captivating.

The purple underside pigmentation is produced by anthocyanins and is most vivid under medium-to-high light levels; at low light the purple fades toward a reddish-brown. Maintaining medium light intensity and good water quality is therefore more important for this cultivar than for green-toned Bucephalandra to achieve its characteristic colour expression.

This is a premium collector cultivar requiring soft water and CO2 supplementation for best performance. Under ideal conditions it produces new leaves regularly, each bringing a fresh burst of purple-green contrast to the aquascape. It is a showpiece plant worthy of a central position in any high-end planted layout.
