Bucephalandra 'Enigma' is one of the most philosophically appropriately named plants in the aquarium hobby — it genuinely presents a different appearance depending on how and when you look at it. Under direct overhead lighting the leaves appear a very dark forest green with a deep, almost black iridescent quality. Viewed from an angle with side-lighting, the same leaves transform into a vivid blue-black that appears almost metallic. This ambiguity of appearance is the defining characteristic that justifies the name.
The shifting appearance makes 'Enigma' particularly rewarding in aquariums with adjustable or moveable lighting, where the colour transformation can be deliberately induced and observed. It is also a plant that reveals itself differently in photographs depending on the light source angle, making it perpetually interesting to document.
As a rare and demanding cultivar, 'Enigma' requires the premium Bucephalandra conditions: very soft slightly acidic water, CO2 injection, and medium lighting. Under lesser conditions the plant survives but the remarkable colour shifting effect diminishes significantly as the leaves lose their depth of colour.
