Bucephalandra sp. 'Kedagang' is one of the most distinctive and admired Bucephalandra varieties in the aquarium hobby, named after a collecting locality in Borneo. It distinguishes itself from other Buce varieties through its relatively elongated, dark green to near-black leaves that develop a striking blue-violet to purple iridescent sheen under appropriate lighting conditions. The contrast between the deep, dark base color and the vivid metallic shimmer is extraordinary and unlike most other aquatic plants. Kedagang grows as a compact rhizomatous cluster that attaches firmly to hardscape via rhizoids and never roots into substrate. Individual leaves are smooth-margined to very slightly wavy, broader and more paddle-shaped than the Green Wavy variety, giving it a distinctly different structural character while sharing the iridescent quality. Like all Bucephalandra, it is endemic to the island of Borneo, where it inhabits fast-flowing, clear, mineral-poor rivers and streams in tropical rainforest environments. In the aquarium, it performs best in soft, slightly acidic water that replicates its native blackwater conditions. Growth is very slow — under good conditions with CO2 and micronutrient dosing, one to two new leaves per month is typical. This slow pace, combined with its exceptional appearance, has made it a collector's item and a standout specimen plant in high-end aquariums. Once established on a piece of driftwood or stone, it forms increasingly lush clusters that accumulate into spectacular colony arrangements over months and years.
