Bucephalandra motleyana

Bucephalandra motleyana is one of the larger and more widespread Bucephalandra species, native to the fast-flowing streams and river margins of Borneo's interior rainforests. It produces broad, elliptical to ovate leaves of deep green, often displaying a faint blue or silver iridescence along the leaf surface midrib and margins. The leaves are held on a slowly creeping rhizome and grow to 6–10 cm individually, making this a medium-to-large Bucephalandra compared to the many miniature varieties.

Like all Bucephalandra, it is an epiphyte that must be attached to rocks, driftwood, or other hard substrates — burying the rhizome in substrate will cause it to rot. It prefers soft, slightly acidic water similar to its native Bornean streams, though it adapts reasonably well to moderately hard conditions over time. Growth is slow, but the plant is long-lived and develops into a lush, spreading clump. Occasional white spadix flowers may appear in the aquarium, adding further charm.
