Bugeye Squeaker

Synodontis contractus is a compact, oval-bodied mochokid from the Congo basin characterised by disproportionately large, prominent eyes that hint at its strongly nocturnal lifestyle. During daylight hours it shelters deeply within caves or beneath rock overhangs, emerging only after darkness to forage actively across the substrate and among rocks.

In the aquarium it is undemanding regarding water chemistry, tolerating soft to moderately hard, slightly acidic to neutral conditions typical of its Congo River habitat. It is peaceful toward tankmates and unlikely to bother fish outside its size range, though it may compete with other cave-dwelling catfish for favoured hiding spots.

Its modest adult size makes it suitable for medium-sized aquariums, and it pairs attractively with other Congo community fish including smaller tetras and dwarf cichlids.
