Butterfly Pleco L048

Dekeyseria sp. L048, the Butterfly Pleco, is a beautifully adapted fast-water loricariid from Venezuelan rivers. Its extremely flattened body, broad pectoral fins, and powerful suction-cup mouth allow it to cling to smooth boulders in torrential current. The intricate marbled pattern of cream and dark brown provides excellent camouflage against rocky substrates. It is one of several species referred to as Butterfly Pleco in the trade, though L048 is specifically the Venezuelan form.

In the aquarium the Butterfly Pleco thrives in tanks with strong flow and good oxygenation, smooth rocks to cling to, and a diet of algae, biofilm, and plant-based sinking foods. It is an entirely peaceful species that coexists well with other community fish. Driftwood provides both refuge and additional biofilm grazing.

Breeding in captivity has been achieved. The flattened eggs are deposited on smooth rock surfaces in high-flow areas. Fry are robust but require fine sinking foods once their yolk sacs are absorbed. Water temperature should be kept in the moderate range of 25–29°C.
