Byckersi Hemiloricaria

Hemiloricaria byckersi inhabits rivers and streams draining into the southern Orinoco in Venezuela, occupying areas with sandy or silty substrates and moderate to low water flow. The genus Hemiloricaria is distinguished from Rineloricaria by subtle morphological features, and its species are often passed over in favour of more commonly available whiptails, making each species a minor rarity in the hobby.

In the aquarium, Hemiloricaria byckersi requires similar care to Rineloricaria species — a sand or fine gravel substrate, some structure for cover, clean water with moderate flow, and a diet based on algae wafers and fresh vegetables. It is a peaceful species that will not bother tankmates and is suitable for South American community aquariums.

Breeding behaviour in the genus broadly follows Rineloricaria patterns — males court females and guard eggs in sheltered sites. Hobbyists interested in breeding should provide appropriate shelters such as PVC tubes or hollow bamboo of suitable diameter.
