Cabomba furcata

Cabomba furcata (syn. C. piauhyensis), commonly called Red Cabomba, is the most demanding and most spectacular member of the genus. Under high light with CO2 and iron-rich fertilisation the finely divided, fan-shaped leaves develop a rich violet-red to magenta colouration that makes this plant one of the most visually striking feathery stem plants in the hobby.

Unlike C. caroliniana, it absolutely requires high light, CO2 injection, and soft, acidic water. In hard or alkaline water the red pigmentation is replaced by dull green and the plant declines rapidly. It is also sensitive to fluctuations in CO2 and temperature — consistency is key.

Best used as a high-impact red feathery accent in the background of high-tech planted tanks. When properly maintained it is extraordinarily beautiful, but it is not a forgiving plant and is best left to experienced aquascapers.
