Calico Crayfish

The Calico Crayfish is a patterned colour morph of Procambarus clarkii developed through selective breeding to express broken, mottled patches of red, cream, and brown across the carapace and claws, resembling a calico cat's coat. Because the pattern is not fixed, each individual is uniquely marked, making them particularly appealing to collectors.

Like other P. clarkii morphs, the Calico is robustly built and adapts well to a wide range of freshwater conditions. It burrows actively and will rearrange substrate and decorations, so a well-anchored hardscape is recommended. Plants should be robust or artificial, as this morph will consume or uproot most live vegetation.

Keepers enjoy this morph for its combination of a familiar, manageable species and the visual uniqueness of its pattern. It is best kept as a solo specimen or in a very large tank with distinct territorial boundaries.
