Cardinal Shrimp

Caridina dennerli, the Cardinal Shrimp, is endemic to the ancient, geologically unique Lake Matano in Sulawesi, Indonesia, and is considered one of the most beautiful freshwater invertebrates in the world. Its vivid cardinal-red body is covered in bright white polka dots, and its striking blue eyes add another layer of visual brilliance. In a dedicated Sulawesi biotope tank, a colony of Cardinal Shrimp is breathtaking.

Unlike most freshwater shrimp, Cardinal Shrimp require warm (27–30°C), hard, alkaline water — the opposite of Caridina bee shrimp requirements. Their native lake is one of the oldest on Earth with remarkably stable water chemistry, and replicating these conditions is essential for long-term success. They should be kept in species-specific Sulawesi setups alongside other compatible Sulawesi endemics.

Cardinal Shrimp reproduce slowly in captivity, carrying very small clutches of large eggs. Their relative rarity and demanding care make them a prestigious challenge for advanced invertebrate keepers.
