Champsochromis spilorhynchus

Champsochromis spilorhynchus is the spotted counterpart to the better-known C. caeruleus, sharing a similarly streamlined body plan and open-water predatory lifestyle. Where caeruleus develops uniform blue, spilorhynchus retains a bold pattern of dark spots against a metallic blue-silver background, giving it a more visually complex appearance. Both sexes show spotted patterning, but males in breeding condition develop a more intense base iridescence.

Like its congener, this is a large, fast-swimming species requiring a very large aquarium with excellent filtration. It is an active open-water hunter that covers large distances in its natural habitat. In captivity it remains highly active and will stress in tanks that are too small or insufficiently aerated.

This species is infrequently available in the hobby, making it a true collector's item for serious Malawi enthusiasts. Maternal mouthbrooding reproduction follows the same pattern as the genus. Best kept as the dominant centerpiece in a large predatory Hap display.
