Chinese Spined Barb

Acrossocheilus spinifer is distributed through rivers and streams of southern China and northern Vietnam, inhabiting clear, cool to warm, moderately fast-flowing waters with rocky and gravelly substrates. It is distinguished by the characteristic serrated spine on the dorsal fin shared by other Acrossocheilus species, which provides some protection from predators. The body is silver with faint lateral markings and a robust, streamlined profile.

In the aquarium this species does best at the cooler end of the tropical range and benefits from good water movement and oxygenation reflecting its stream habitat. It is a schooling fish that becomes more confident in groups of five or more, and in a large tank with open water it schools beautifully. A sandy or rocky substrate with some smooth stones creates an appropriate environment.

Acrossocheilus spinifer is an omnivore that readily accepts sinking pellets, spirulina wafers, frozen invertebrates, and blanched vegetables. Its preference for cooler conditions makes it an excellent choice for temperate aquariums or subtropical setups where warm-water tropicals would be stressed.
