The Clown Barb is one of the more visually spectacular cyprinids available in the hobby. Native to blackwater and clearwater streams of Borneo and Sumatra, it develops a brilliant orange to reddish-orange body with bold, irregular dark blotches distributed along the flanks — a pattern reminiscent of a clown's costume, hence its common name. It grows to approximately 12 cm, making it one of the larger barbs commonly encountered in aquarium shops. Like most barbs, the Clown Barb is semi-aggressive and has a tendency to nip the fins of slow-moving or long-finned tankmates, but this behavior is considerably reduced when it is kept in an appropriate school. It is a powerful, energetic swimmer that needs space to move freely. In the wild it inhabits streams associated with forested areas, often over sandy or rocky substrates with submerged wood and leaf litter. In the aquarium it adapts well to conditions that mimic this environment: slightly acidic to neutral water, driftwood, and robust plants. The Clown Barb is an omnivore that eagerly accepts most aquarium foods. Its impressive size, bold coloration, and active personality make it a centerpiece species in a large, lively community tank.
