The Cobalt Blue Discus is a captive-bred colour variety of the discus complex, celebrated for its intense, even cobalt-blue coloration across the entire body, often accented by delicate turquoise horizontal striping on the head and fins. Selective breeding over decades has produced specimens with near-uniform, jewel-like hues that are unrivalled in the freshwater hobby.
Like all discus, this variety shares its roots in the warm, soft, blackwater river systems of the Amazon basin in Brazil. Wild discus inhabit slow-moving, deeply shaded waterways with very low mineral content and slightly acidic pH, conditions that must be closely replicated in the home aquarium for the fish to truly flourish. In captivity, the Cobalt Blue is generally hardier than its wild counterparts owing to generations of selective breeding, but it remains a demanding species requiring consistent, high-quality husbandry.
Cobalt Blue Discus are peaceful, sociable fish that feel most secure in groups of six or more. A tall aquarium of at least 200 litres with gentle filtration, dim lighting, and frequent water changes provides the optimal environment. They reward patient, detail-oriented aquarists with spectacular colour, fascinating social behaviour, and the potential for successful breeding. Their calm demeanour and striking appearance make them one of the most sought-after fish in the hobby.
