Hypancistrus sp. L083, the Coffee and Cream Pleco, is a medium-sized loricariid from the blackwater tributaries of the upper Rio Negro in Brazil. Its warm brown base colour is scattered with fine cream-to-white spots in a pattern reminiscent of a latte — hence its evocative common name. It is a somewhat subtler species compared to many showpiece plecos, but its understated elegance makes it a favourite among connoisseurs of blackwater loricariids.
The Coffee and Cream Pleco requires the soft, acidic conditions typical of Rio Negro species: pH 4.5–6.5, low conductivity, and warm temperatures of 26–30°C. It will not tolerate hard or alkaline water. Driftwood, leaf litter, and subdued lighting replicate its natural habitat and encourage confident behaviour. Its omnivorous diet should lean toward meaty foods supplemented with algae-based items.
Males are territorial toward each other and should each be provided with their own cave. Breeding in captivity follows the standard Hypancistrus pattern of cave spawning with paternal egg guarding. It is a moderately challenging species primarily due to its blackwater water chemistry requirements.
