Barbus nummifer inhabits coastal river systems draining into the Indian Ocean from Kenya south through Tanzania, occupying clear to moderately turbid lowland rivers and streams. Its common name refers to its remarkably large, rounded scales that catch light and glint in a manner reminiscent of scattered coins. It is a medium-sized, active barb that schools in open water.

In captivity this species is hardy and adapts well to a range of tropical conditions. It tolerates slightly harder, more alkaline water than many barbs owing to its coastal distribution, making it suitable for aquariums with mineral-rich tap water. A spacious tank with good filtration, moderate water movement, and a mix of open space and planted cover is ideal.

Barbus nummifer is an eager feeder that accepts flake, pellets, and frozen invertebrates. It mixes peacefully with other fish of comparable size and temperament. Its distinctive large-scale appearance and active schooling make it a talking point in any East African biotope aquarium.
