Colombian Blue-Red Tetra

Hyphessobrycon columbianus was first described from the Río Acandí drainage in northwestern Colombia and quickly became a popular aquarium fish due to the dramatic contrast between its iridescent blue body and vibrant red caudal fin. Males in peak condition are genuinely stunning, and a large school in a spacious planted tank is a remarkable display.

This species is hardier and slightly larger than many Hyphessobrycon, tolerating a wider range of water parameters than most South American tetras. It does best in groups of ten or more and appreciates both open swimming areas and sheltered planting zones. Some fin-nipping can occur if the group is too small or if tank mates have long, flowing fins.

Feeding is uncomplicated: it accepts quality flake, pellets, and frozen foods enthusiastically. With regular partial water changes, a varied diet, and a suitable group size, this tetra is straightforward to keep and excellent for the intermediate aquarist.
