Colombian Zebra Pleco L027a

Hypancistrus sp. L027a is the Colombian Zebra Pleco, a visually striking member of the striped Hypancistrus group originating from the Rio Meta drainage in Colombia. Its black-and-white alternating banding pattern is strikingly similar to the iconic L046 Zebra Pleco from the Rio Xingu, though it represents a distinct population or possibly a separate species. It is an active, carnivore-leaning bottom dweller that thrives in warm, well-oxygenated water.

The Colombian Zebra Pleco reaches approximately 10 cm and is suitable for aquariums of 80 L or more. It requires caves for shelter and spawning, and does best with strong flow replicating its fast-water river habitat. Its diet should focus on meaty foods — bloodworms, brine shrimp, and high-protein sinking pellets — with occasional algae-based supplements.

Like all small Hypancistrus, males are territorial toward each other. A single male with one or more females is the preferred arrangement. Breeding is achievable in captivity under stable, warm conditions, making it a rewarding species for dedicated loricariid enthusiasts.
