Compressed Piranha

Serrasalmus compressus stands out among piranhas for its extreme lateral compression — the body is noticeably narrower than most Serrasalmus, a likely adaptation for hunting in dense flooded vegetation where manouverability is more important than raw bulk. It is found in blackwater systems across the Amazon basin.

This species demands the softest, most acidic water of any piranha in the trade. pH above 7.0 and hardness above 8 dGH will cause rapid deterioration. Tannin supplementation via driftwood, peat filtration, or Indian almond leaves is strongly recommended. It is a specialist species suitable only for very experienced keepers.
